Phi Beta Kappa Taps 24 Radcliffe Seniors

The Phi Beta Kappa lota Chapter of Massachusetts has elected 24 Radcliffe seniors to its midst, Radcliffe officials announced last week.

Although the new inductees to the honor society, who were chosen last Wednesday from a pool of 48 candidates, will receive no money or other form of remuneration, several of the inductees said the prestige was more than enough of an award.

"Too much grade consciousness is a bad thing," said Deborah A. Cohen '90 of Cabot House. "But this is a good prize."

"To get it is a really amazing and wonderful thing," said Julie E. Green '90 of Quincy House.

While many of the new members said they were pleased by the honor, several said that a Phi Beta Kappa induction was nothing to get too excited about.

"It wasn't really on my mind," said Leslie J. Levin '90 of Quincy House. "It was nice when it happened though."

"I've nothing to say," said Dawn A. Clifton '90 of Eliot House. "It was important to me only because my mother got it."

The 24 inductees were chosen by a review board of seven people, including faculty members, Radcliffe graduates and inductees from last spring.

Students elected in this meeting were notified of their nomination in October by Radcliffe Dean Phillipa A. Bovet and were asked to submit two letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with their academic work, said new inductee Susanne Wachsstock '90 of North House.

Selections were made entirely on on the basis of academic records and the recommendations submitted to the committee, Cohen said.
