Men Booters Spoil Tigers' Ivy Hopes

Soccer Notebook

The mighty Tiger hath fallen.

Thanks to the Harvard men's soccer team's 4-2 overtime victory over Princeton last Sunday at Ohiri Field, the Tigers no longer hold first place in the Ivy League. That honor belongs to Yale.

With the upset victory, Harvard ended the week on a positive note, after starting it off with a disappointing loss to B.C. last Wednesday night. The Eagles defeated the Crimson, 3-1.

Freshman Peter Cochran's goal just one minute into overtime gave Harvard (6-8 overall, 3-3 Ivy) all it needed to dispose of the Tigers (9-3, 4-2). Cochran was named Ivy Player of the Week for his efforts.

In addition to Cochran, Derek Mills, Brian Enge and Jeremy Amen also scored for the Crimson. The four-goal outburst was the most Harvard has scored since it blanked MIT, 4-0, in the first game of the season.

In addition, sophomore Jamie Reilly recorded 12 saves to seize the win.

In the Clutch: With his overtime goal against Princeton, Amen netted his fourth tally of the season. Three of these goals have come in Ivy games, putting Amen at the head of Harvard's Ivy scoring leaders.

Mills, Enge and Cochran have scored the Crimson's other league goals.

Mills' tally against Princeton lifted his team scoring lead to 12 points (4 goals, 4 assists). Senior Nick D'Onofrio (4-1--9) and Amen (4-0--8) round out the top of the scoring list.

Eli Reign: Yale (10-3, 5-1) gained sole possession for first place, when it defeated Penn, 2-1, last weekend. The victory was Yale's fifth-straight Ivy win.

Sophomore Scott Wasserman scored the game-winner with his first goal as a Yalie.

The Elis can clinch the title Saturday, when they face Cornell, a game in which Yale is heavily favored. A win would also give the Bulldogs an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

In other games around the league last weekend, Cornell won its first game, defeating Dartmouth, 1-0. The Big Red moved a point ahead of Brown, which lost to Columbia, 2-1.

Deck the Halls: Princeton's Andrew Dechet (5-4--14) continues to lead the Ivy in scoring. Nick Ziadle (4-3--11) appears to be the only player who could catch Dechet on the last weekend, but Ziadle will need additional help from the Quaker defense to shut down the high-scoring Tiger when the two teams clash to close out the Ivy season.

Harvard's duo of sophomore goalies, Scott Salisbury (0.43 goals-against average) and Reilly (0.92), rank first and fourth, respectively, in the Ivy goalie statistics.

Yale's Bryan Martin (0.77) ranks second overall and first among goalies who have played every game. Martin is a major reason for the Bulldogs' surge to the pinnacle of the Ivies.

Brown Showdown: Harvard will end its season Friday night at Brown. The Bruins (3-9-1, 1-4) currently occupy the basement in the Ivy League.

Last year, the Crimson and Brown battled to a 2-2 tie. The Bruins lead the overall series, 8-7.

Seniors David Kramer, Roger Chapman, Richard Knight, Andrew Goldfarb, D'Onofrio and Mills will all be playing in their last soccer game for Harvard.
