Competition reigns in the central market of Budapest on Tolbuhin St., as peppers ripen and vendors strive to attract customers. Built during the glory days of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the Tolbuhin market exhibits an atmosphere of abundance. Although Hungary has long existed in the shadow of the Soviet Union, the indoor market reflects none of the food shortages and the long lines that are characteristic of many Eastern Bloc countries.
