The Harvard golf team finished 11th in the two-day 41-team New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) championships, held Tuesday and yesterday at the Country Club of New Seabury in New Seabury, Mass.

The Crimson compiled a four-man two-round total of 642 strokes, 56 behind first-place finisher Central Connecticut (586). Harvard's finish put it two strokes ahead of Ivy foe Dartmouth but 12 behind Yale.

"This is the best finish that we've had the last couple of years at this tournament," said junior Captain Mike Foster, who lead the team with a 153-stroke total.

Foster had a rocky first day, shooting a nine-over-par 81 on the club's blue course and finishing third among the Crimson's competitors. But the Crimson still ended the first day in a very respectable eighth place.

"After the first day, we were in pretty good shape," Foster said. "But I wouldn't say we played badly [yesterday]."

In fact, Foster blazed through yesterday's green course with a 72, the third-lowest score for all competitors. That tally, which was two over par, gave Foster a 153-stroke finish--nine strokes behind medalist Gary Rencurrell of Central Connecticut (74-72-144).

ECAC Qualifiers

Last Thursday, Foster qualified for ECAC championship action this weekend at Bethpage Country Club on Long Island. Also qualifying was sophomore Robert Kincaid, who took second-place honors for the Crimson at NEIGAs with a two-day total of 160(80-80). Andy Chao, Harvard's number-three man, was the Crimson standout in round one with a 77 but shot 88 on the green course for a two-day total of 165.

Rounding out Harvard's varsity five were Dennis Crowley (83-85-168) and Joe Scornavacci (91-84-175).
