The Harvard men's and women's track teams will begin their spring seasons today with a home meet against Northeastern on McCurdy Track.
Both teams are coming off spring training tripsto Houston, Texas.
The Harvard women's team defeated Northeasternduring the indoor season, and hopes for a repeatvictory in today's match-up. The Crimson's strongshowing in the Bayou Classic last week is proofthat the team has a competitive edge.
Sophomore Meredith Rainey took second in the400 meters over spring break, and continues to bea major contributor to the women's team. RomneyResney, who won the 10,000 meters, is sure to giveNortheastern a run for its money. Co-CaptainChristine Lount, runner-up in the 5,000 meters atthe Bayou Classic, is also expected to fare wellin today's meet.
The women's team is confident about its potentialfor a successful season. "People look strongercompared to other years," Co-Captain Nancy Lutzsaid.
The Harvard men's team lost to Northeasternduring the indoor season, and aims to settle thescore in today's meet. During spring break, theCrimson men prepared for today's season openerwith double training sessions and a pre-seasontriangular meet against Brown and Rice billed asthe "Meeting of the Minds."
Harvard's strongest suit lies in the throwingevents, including the hammer throw, shot put,discus and javelin. Harry Rothschild won the shotin last week's pre-season meet, while Nic Sweeneytook first in the discus and Matt Collins won thejavelin throw.
According to Co-Captain James Russell,Northeastern will be competitive in the throwingevents. "It could go 50-50," Russell predicted."We hope to win the hammer and discus, but theymight take the shot and javelin."
Russell expects junior Chris Sullivan to winthe high jump and Rutledge Simmons to take thetriple jump. Harvard should also sweep thesteepiechase and earn points in the sprints, withefforts from Paul Mayer, Pete Wilensky, David Sonand Mauricio Velez.
