After one night of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship, Harvard relinquished whatever hopes it had for team glory. Yet after three rounds of competition at Syracuse University, a few in the Crimson's constellation of stars retained some luster.

As always, Harvard Captain Peter Holmes excelled, defeating two Ivy League foes by scores of 3-1 in the 167-Ib. division. After overcoming Columbia's Paul Roux, Holmes faced long-time rival Leo Kostelnick, Yale's captain. Kostelnick was humbled again, losing to Holmes for the fifth time in four years.

Holmes will advance to tomorrow's semifinals, meeting Andy Rice from Cornell. The two tied 1-1 earlier this year, the only blemish on Holmes' undefeated record.

Alex Konovalchik was the only other Harvard victor in the opening round, shaving Princeton's Paul Dzenitis, 5-4, at 190-lbs. Konovalchik was pinned in the quarterfinals, falling to Syracuse's nationally-ranked Scott Kelly at 4:57.

In the first consolation round, 118-lb. Todd Cameron pinned Keith Stanford from Navy at 5:08. John Freeman also triumphed, dominating Columbia's Ron Hatcher with a 7-1 decision. Both preserved their hopes to win the consolation tournament and thus enter the winner's bracket in this double-elimination tournament. Harvard totaled a meager three points overall, leaving it irretrievably behind first-place Lehigh and second-place Syracuse.
