AMHERST--Three white students have been ordered to undergo an alcohol education program, and two of them have been placed on disciplinary probation following an alleged attack on two Black students at the University of Massachusetts, a university spokeswoman said today.

Spokeswoman Jeanne Hopkins declined to identify any of the students.

Violated University Rules

She said that as the result of disciplinary hearings held earlier this month, all three students were found to have violated the university's rules on drinking, and two of the three were found to have violated the university's rules on assault.

She said the two students allegedly involved in the assault were ordered to leave their dormitories and were placed on disciplinary probation for the remainder of this school year and the 1988-89 school year. They will be allowed to attend classes, she said, but could be subject to further action if they violate any university rules.

Two other white students, allegedly involved in the Feb. 7 incident following a dormitory party, withdrew from the university prior to the start of disciplinary hearings, she said.

Lawyers for the students could not be immediately reached for comment. The students have until March 30 to appeal the disciplinary actions to university administrators, Hopkins said.

Testimony in a show-cause hearing on whether criminal charges should be filed against the five and a sixth man, who did not attend the university, was scheduled to resume today in Northampton District Court.

The incident sparked a six-day takeover of a campus building by minority students.
