Yale freshman Ed Peterson scored 23 points, including a crucial three-pointer late in the second half, to propel the Elis past George Washington University in Washington Saturday.
Peterson made two free throws with 5:57 remaining to break a 57-57 tie and give Yale the lead for good.
Then, with Yale nursing a 63-61 lead, he hit a three-pointer from the top of the key for a 66-61 advantage with 3:03 left.
George Washington, which scored only two points in the final 6:18, never cut the gap below four points the rest of the way.
Dartmouth 88, Kent St. 86
Dartmouth captured third place in the Investors Classic when it defeated Kent St. Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
Forward Jim Barton and John McKay combined for 58 points and seven three-pointers. Barton made 17 free throws among his 34 points, and McKay added 24 points and four triples.
Dartmouth, which evened its record to 1-1, led, 43-36, at the half.
North Carolina St. 110, Columbia 54
Eighteenth-ranked North Carolina State routed Columbia in the season-opener for both teams Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.
The Wolfpack, coming off exhibition losses to Marathon Oil and the Soviet Union National Team, were never threatened and expanded a 53-26 halftime lead to 60 points in the second half.
Five different Wolfpack members tallied in double figures, led by sophomore guard Chris Corchiani (17 points).
Columbia committed 19 turnovers in the opening half.
Brown 83, New Hampshire 78
Brown forward Marcus Thompson scored 34 points to lead Brown past New Hampshire in overtime Saturday in Durham, N.H.
UNH trailed by 17 points four minutes into the second half but battled back to take a 72-71 lead on a Keith Carpenter basket with 55 seconds remaining in regulation.
Bob Cummings missed a one-in-one for UNH with 14 seconds to go and Carpenter got the rebound and was fouled. He made the first and missed the second, sending the game into overtime.
Rick Lloyd hit two free throws and Thompson scored on a 15-footer in the first minute of OT to give Brown the lead for good.
