Hampered by offside calls and frustrating turnovers, the Harvard field hockey team fell to Dartmouth, 1-0, Saturday in Hanover, N.H.

The lone goal was scored just past the midway mark in the second half off a corner play. Initially blocked by Co-Captain Katie McAnaney, the ball deflected onto a Big Green stick, setting up the game-winning goal.

Poorly executed penalty corners hurt the Crimson, which was called offsides on four of eight opportunities.

"We didn't make good adjustments, and unfortunately our mistakes, mental errors, were costly," said Harvard Coach Sue Caples, who was nontheless pleased with the Crimson's performance. The mistakes resulted in a breakdown of concentration, according to Caples.

The stickwomen, who outshot Dartmouth 23-16, had a last hope of tying the score with one minute to go in the game. Harvard was awarded a penalty stroke which went wide.

The Crimson played strong defense, anchored by Co-Captain and goaltender Denise Katsias (nine saves), junior sweeper Lynn Frangione and junior back Erin O'Brien.

"The offsides threw us, breaking up our offensive momentum," McAnaney said." We were happy with our performance, although the outcome was disappointing."

Harvard, now 5-5 overall (1-2 Ivy), travels across the river to Boston University on Thursday night, where the Crimson will seek victory against the formidable Terriers, currently ranked 10th nationally.
