Former director of the Law School Health Services Dr. Leo J. Cass '33 died on Sunday at the age of 76.
Cass graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1938 and immediately began working in the hygiene department of University Health Services.
In 1946 Cass became the Law School's physician, and went on to serve as director of the Law School Health Services from 1956 until his retirement in 1974.
Dr. Preston K. Munter, current director of the Law School Health Services in Pound Hall, said that Cass was very devoted to Harvard and to UHS. Cass also had an interest in pharmacology and for a time owned a private firm specializing in pharmacological research, Munter said.
After Cass retired in 1974, he moved to the Virgin Islands where he worked for several years with the public health service on St. John's. Cass convinced the health service to purchase a well-equipped boat which he used to carry emergency patients to the hospital on St. Thomas.
Cass next worked on an Indian reservation in North Dakota for a couple of years. After the weather proved dangerous to his health, he moved to a retirement home in the Boston area.
He is survived by his son Leo M. Cass, who is also a doctor.
