N. Dakota Wins Series, 9-4

Tony Hrkac scored two goals and assisted on two other as North Dakota defeated St. Lawrence 6-3 to win its quarterfinal series Saturday night and earn its 11th berth in the Final Four.

In scoring four points in the game, Hrkac set an NCAA record for most points scored in a season with 111. The previous mark was 109 established by Bill Watson of Minnesota-Duluth in 1985.

North Dakota, 38-8 and ranked number one in the nation, will play Harvard in the semifinals next week at Detroit.

The Sioux entered Saturday's total-goal series against St. Lawrence, 24-1, with a two-goal advantage after winning the first game Friday, 3-1.

The two teams ended the first period tied at one on a power-play goal by Pete Lappin of the Saints at 6:38 and an unassisted goal by Hrkac at 9:31. The two teams combined for 14 penalties in the period.

But North Dakota got the best of St. Lawrence in the second period, knocking in four goals to the Saints' one to build a commanding 5-2 lead. Malcolm Parks, Hrkac, Lee Davidson and Mike LaMoine all scored goals for the Sioux, while Mike Hurlbut scored for St. Lawrence.

The goal by Hrkac, who assisted on Parks' goal, set the scoring record for him when Bob Joyce broke away and took a shot that bounced off the body of Saints' goalie Scott Year-wood. Hrkac followed with a shot over Yearwood, who was lying on the ice.

Gary Robertson of the Saints and Joyce each put in goals in the third period to complete the game's scoring. Hrkac assisted on Joyce's goal.

Mich. St. Wins Series, 11-5

Mitch Messier scored two goals and assisted on another Saturday night to lead Michigan State to a 5-3 victory over Maine, sending the Spartans to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament.

The defending national champion Spartans defeated the Black Bears, 6-2, Friday to take the two-game, total-goals series by an 11-5 margin.

Maine pulled goalie Scott King once late in the second period and four more times in the third period in hopes of cutting the total-goals margin. But Michigan State scored twice in the third period with King out of the net.

The Spartans took a 1-0 first period lead on a Messier goal at 19:15. Maine tied it at 9:32 of second period on a goal by Steve Stantini, assisted by Dave Capuano and John Baker.
