Boston University's Mike Kelfer scored a goal 5:28 into overtime last night as the Terriers successfully defended their Beanpot title with a 4-3 victory over Northeastern.
On the winning play, B.U. defenseman David Thiesing took a hard shot from the right slot which was deflected wide by Huskie goalie Bruce Racine. The puck ended up right in front of the net where Kelfer gained control and fired home the game-winner.
"The puck came out in the slot, and I just turned around and let one go," Kelfer said, "and it went in."
B.U. looked to have the contest sealed in regulation time, carrying a 3-2 margin into the final minutes of play. But at the 19:00 mark of the third period, N.U.'s Dave O'Brien launched a wicked slap shot from the right point which deflected off right point which deflected off Terrier netminder Terry Taillefer's stick and into the corner of the goal.
