A break-in was reported two nights ago at the main Building and Grounds maintenance yard. A steam shovel, a blowtorch, and 100,000 square feet of sod were the only items taken as a result of the heist, the first such heist of this scale in recent memory.
Officials are not saying when the heist took place, but sources say that it could have happened up until ten days ago, the last time a full inventory was taken.
Biff Souterman, the guard on duty at the time, was puzzled about how the loot, worth over $45,000, could have been taken out of the yard without his knowledge.
"The guy must have been a superman," said the guard. "I didn't see anything unusual all night, but when I went out at daybreak to check everything out, the stuff was gone."
Yale police would not comment on the fact that a male Caucasian wearing a Yale hockey jersey, a blue bandanna, and blue sunglasses was driving a steam shovel through downtown New Haven at a fast rate last night.
