The men's and women's track and field teams suffered tough defeats to Northeastern University in a dual meet on Saturday at Gordon Track.
The Northeastern men crushed the Harvard men, 101-35, while the Northeastern women snagged a slight, 61-57, victory.
The men's blowout was especially humiliating, but senior Co-Captain Steve Abbey commended the Northeastern team on the quality of its runners. "They have a few guys that are almost All-America caliber," Abbey said.
Despite the score, there were a few bright spots for the Crimson men.
Junior James Russell and sophomore Joseph Giani finished first and second in the 35-lb. weight hammer throw with Russell's winning throw reaching 18.24 meters.
Sophomore Christopher Sullivan snagged the Crimson's only other victory when won he the high jump with a jump of 6-ft., 8-in.
The women's meet was much closer and provided a good outing for the Crimson's distance runners after a two-week break from practice following the cross-country season.
"We did really well under the circumstances," said sophomore Jacquelyn Ball, who ran one of the legs of the winning 2-mile relay.
Senior Co-Captain Erin Sugrue, the first Harvard woman ever to clear six feet in the high jump, won that event with a jump of 5-ft., 8-in.
Sugrue said that although she was disappointed that the team dropped the close meet, she was "looking forward to better meets in the future."
