A story in Section B of today's Crimson mentions an incident which allegedly took place recently involving Bassim Zaki, an expert on Kufic tombstones who has worked at Harvard.
There was no incident such as that described in the Section B story, Zaki said in an interview yesterday.
According to Zaki, the source of the account may have been confused about an incident which occurred in 1982 and had nothing to do with Harvard, Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies Nadav Safran, or the CIA.
Accounts of the incident were originally described by Richard N. Frye, Aga Khan Professor of Iranian, and Wolfhart P. Heinrichs, Professor of Arabic.
As the story indicates, Zaki could not be reached for comment before Section B went to press.
