Sailing
The Harvard varsity sailing team sailed by its competition, placing first in the Team Race Elimination on Charles River over the weekend.
Thus, the sailors qualified for the New England Team Race Championship May 10--11 at Providence, R.I.
Crimson duo's Gordon Burnes and Petra Schumann, Peter Wagner and Jeff Kurland, and John Pernick and Beth Pryor all qualified.
Harvard whipped everyone as it coasted to a perfect 7--0 during the competition.
Meanwhile, the Harvard women's sailing team eased into a fourth place finish in the Emily Wick Trophy at MIT.
In the A divison, Harvard's Jane Fogg and Dana Barron tallied 37 points, good enough for third place. Sailing in the B divison, Betsy Robinson and Tammy Harvey racked up 38 points to finish fourth for the Crimson.
Women's Water Polo
The Harvard women's water polo team has been beefing its record this year against weak opponents like MIT and URI. But over the weekend, the squad played at the Queens College Tournament and lost a pair of tough ones to Slippery Rock and Queens.
In the first game, Harvard trounced an inexperienced UMass squad, 13-5. But then Slippery Rock--stocked with players of gargantuan proportions--pummelled Harvard, 11-2. In the last game, a fatigued Crimson squad fell to Queens, 10-5.
The losses dropped Harvard's record to 12-3. Five of those victories, however, came against MIT--a weaker team which probably won't play in the upcoming Harvard-hosted National tournament. Stronger squads--like Slippery Rock--will participate, making this weekend's tournament excellent preparation for Nationals.
Catherine Ysreal tallied four times, including once when the squad was short-handed.
