Service Held In Memory Of Winthrop Tutor

More than 100 people attended a memorial service Wednesday in Memorial Chapel for a Winthrop House music tutor who died on April 2. He was 36.

Thomas F. Johnson '72 died of cancer after being hospitalized for 18 months, said Kim E. Fraser, the assistant to the masters of Winthrop House.

"He was a fabulous young man, a talented pianist, and a gifted teacher of music," Martha H. Davis, co-master of Winthrop House said yesterday. "I can't think of anyone who met him who didn't like him."

Johnson, who specialized in chamber music and piano as a tutor for the past 10 years, is survived by his sister, Nancy J. Pinard.

Michael Milburn '79 delivered the eulogy at the Wednesday service. Milburn took piano lessons from Johnson in 1976, when he first became a tutor at Winthrop.
