Democrat Richard Shelby narrowly defeated incumbent Jeremiah Denton. Guy Hunt, however, became the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction.

ALASKA

In Alaska's Senatorial election Republican incumbent Frank E. Murkowski faced a challenge from Democrat Glenn Olds. In the Governor's race. Arliss Sturgulewski, is squaring off against Republican Steve Cowper.

In the race to the fill the seat of retiring five-term Senator Barry Goldwater. Republican John McCain was the winner. In a tight three-way race, Republican Evan Meacham won the governship.

ARKANSAS

Incumbent Democratic Senator Dale Bumpers advanced his chances in the Vice-Presidential and Presidential sweepstakes with a convincing victory. Incumbent Democratic Governor Bill Clinton also won re-election.

CALIFORNIA

Democratic Senator Alan Cranston held off a tough challenge from Republican Ed Zschau. In the race for the state house, first-term incumbent George Deukmejian easily beat the 68-year-old Black mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley.

COLORADO

Colorado Democratic Rep. Tim Wirth '61 defeated Ken Kramer to retain the Democrats' seat. For governor, Democrat Roy Romer topped Republican Ted Strickland.

CONNECTICUT

Incumbent Democrat Christopher Dodd won re-election with more than 60 percent of the vote. In a tightly contested governor's race, incumbent Democrat Bill O'Neill defeated Julie Belaga.
