The United States commits more terrorist acts than any other country or guerilla group, MIT linguistics professor A. Noam Chomsky told about 50 freshmen last night at a dinner talk.
"The U.S. has by far the world's most widespread terror network," said Chomsky, MIT professor of linguistics and philosophy.
Americans do not realize the extent of this country's terrorism because "when an act is carried out by our side, it's 'retaliation,' no matter what the facts. Whenever it's by their side, it's 'unprovoked,' no matter what the facts," he said.
The self-proclaimed libertarian socialist cited last spring's bombing of Libya by the U.S. "The American bombing of Libya was totally unprovoked," he said. At the time, the Reagan Administration said that it was retaliating for Libya's alleged bombing of a West German discotheque frequented by American servicemen.
The government fabricated the evidence that linked Libya to the incident, Chomsky said. "Reagan was looking for an excuse to kill Libyans."
