Brown, 32-27

A tough Brown defense picked off five passes and forced a safety as the Bruins upset the University of Rhode Island, 32-27, Saturday at Providence, R.I.

Birthday boy Jamie Potkul rushed for 115 yards on 34 carries--including a nine-yard scoring scamper--and quarterback Steve Kettelberger threw for 228 yards and one TD to lead the balanced Brown attack.

Meanwhile, URI signalcaller Tom Ehrhardt completed 30 of 67 passes for 461 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Brian Forster amassed 327 reception yards--a national record for tight ends.

The Rams sprinted to a 10-0 first quarter lead, but the Bruins tallied 14 points in the second quarter to cut the halftime deficit to 20-14.

Brown captured the lead with an explosive third quarter--scoring 18 points on two touchdowns, a safety and a field goal--and held on for the victory.

Army, 41-3

Undefeated Army amassed 525 total yards--449 on the ground alone--en route to a 41-3 thrashing of Penn at Philadelphia Saturday.

Cadet Clarence Jones scored twice in the first half on runs of one and six yards as the visitors sprinted to a 14-3 halftime lead. The Quakers' sole points came on a 41-yard field goal by Ray Saunders in the second quarter.

Army (3-0) put the contest out of reach in the third period when quarterback Rob Healy scored on a two-yard run and Craig Stopa chipped in a 41-yard field goal.

Penn (now 1-1) gained only 84 yards rushing and was held scoreless in the second half.

UNH, 23-7

Tailback Andre Garron rushed for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday to lead New Hampshire to a 23-7 win over Dartmouth.

Following an eight-yard punt that was killed by the wind, Dartmouth (now 0-2) took over at the UNH 35 on its second possession. Eight plays later, Ernie Torain rumbled over from the one for what proved to be the Big Green's only score.

The Wildcats (2-1) responded early in the second quarter when quarterback Rich Byrne scored from three yards out. The run capped a 12-play, 90-yard drive.

Eric Facey gave New Hampshire a 10-7 lead later in the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third period, Garron got the Wildcats rolling on with scoring jaunts of 11 yards and one yard.

Lehigh, 34-13

Lehigh signalcaller Marty Horn threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns Saturday afternoon to power the Engineers to a 34-13 cakewalk over Princeton at Princeton, N.J.

Freshman Lee Blum led Lehigh's overwhelming rushing attack with 85 yards on 21 carries--including a 10-yard touchdown jaunt in the second period.

Overall, the Engineer offense racked up 422 total yards, 295 more than the defense allowed the Tigers (now 1-1). Lehigh gained 24 first downs, twice as many as Princeton.

The Tigers now lead the all-time series between the teams, which dates back to 1887, 35-3. The squads had not met for 50 years prior to this weekend's contest.

Lafayette, 20-0

Lafayette capitalized on Columbia turnovers to blank the hapless Lions, 20-0, Saturday at Easton, Pa.

Columbia has now lost 13 consecutive games, a streak stretching back to the 1983 season.

Bruce McIntyre led the Leopard locomotive with 105 yards rushing--including scoring runs of one and eight yards.

Lafayette's other touchdown came on a three-yard pass from quarterback Jim Johnson to tight end Carl St. Bernard in the second quarter.

Bow-Wow-Wow

The Lions managed a mere 183 total yards. Fullback John Chirico paced the visitors with 65 yards on 17 carries.

Columbia was without the services of punter Peter Murphy, who quit the squad after last week's 49-17 drubbing at the hands of Harvard when Lion Coach Jim Garrett accused him of dogging it.

His replacement, John Williamson, averaged 34.4 yards on nine punts. Murphy had averaged 38.5 yards per kick against the Crimson.

Colgate, 21-20

Safety Neil Viserto intercepted a two-point conversion try in the fourth quarter to give Colgate a 21-20 victory over Cornell Saturday at Ithaca, N.Y.

Cornell (0-2) had scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass from reserve quarterback Chip Knapp to Todd Presley with 1:16 remaining on the clock. The Big Red elected to go for the win, but Viserto picked off Knapp's attempted pass.

Colgate (2-1) fell behind, 14-0, in the first quarter, but rallied to score the next three touchdowns. Kenny Gamble--who amassed 151 yards on 33 carries for the afternoon--tallied twice in the second quarter on runs of one and two yards.

An 86-yard pass reception by split end Tim Walsh in the third quarter stretched the visitors' edge to 21-14, setting up the game-ending gamble by Cornell.

Yale--UConn

Power outages and other hurricane-related problems forced the cancellation of Saturday's scheduled Connecticut-Yale football match-up.
