Brown, 32-27

A tough Brown defense picked off five passes and forced a safety as the Bruins upset the University of Rhode Island, 32-27, Saturday at Providence, R.I.

Birthday boy Jamie Potkul rushed for 115 yards on 34 carries--including a nine-yard scoring scamper--and quarterback Steve Kettelberger threw for 228 yards and one TD to lead the balanced Brown attack.

Meanwhile, URI signalcaller Tom Ehrhardt completed 30 of 67 passes for 461 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Brian Forster amassed 327 reception yards--a national record for tight ends.

The Rams sprinted to a 10-0 first quarter lead, but the Bruins tallied 14 points in the second quarter to cut the halftime deficit to 20-14.

Brown captured the lead with an explosive third quarter--scoring 18 points on two touchdowns, a safety and a field goal--and held on for the victory.

Army, 41-3

Undefeated Army amassed 525 total yards--449 on the ground alone--en route to a 41-3 thrashing of Penn at Philadelphia Saturday.

Cadet Clarence Jones scored twice in the first half on runs of one and six yards as the visitors sprinted to a 14-3 halftime lead. The Quakers' sole points came on a 41-yard field goal by Ray Saunders in the second quarter.

Army (3-0) put the contest out of reach in the third period when quarterback Rob Healy scored on a two-yard run and Craig Stopa chipped in a 41-yard field goal.

Penn (now 1-1) gained only 84 yards rushing and was held scoreless in the second half.

UNH, 23-7

Tailback Andre Garron rushed for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday to lead New Hampshire to a 23-7 win over Dartmouth.

Following an eight-yard punt that was killed by the wind, Dartmouth (now 0-2) took over at the UNH 35 on its second possession. Eight plays later, Ernie Torain rumbled over from the one for what proved to be the Big Green's only score.

The Wildcats (2-1) responded early in the second quarter when quarterback Rich Byrne scored from three yards out. The run capped a 12-play, 90-yard drive.
