A quicker and more experienced University of Vermont field hockey team tore apart an outmatched Harvard squad, 4-1, Saturday in Burlington, Vt.

The loss in the season opener spoiled the debut of first-year Harvard Coach Nita Lam-borghini and showed that this could prove to be another very long year for the Cantabs.

A year ago, the Crimson dropped 10 shutout losses, including six in a row, and fell to last place in the Ivy League for the first time in more than five years.

Saturday in Catamount country, a lack of defensive experience on Harvard's end allowed the hosts to jump to an early advantage and hang on for the three-goal victory.

Harvard, the only Ivy team not to play an Ancient Eight game this weekend, will continue its pre-Ivy schedule Tuesday, when it travels to Northeastern to take on the Huskies.
