A sign on a refrigerator display case announces the Harvard Square convenience store's bewildering soda price schedule a three-later bottle of soda costs $2.19, a two-later bottle goes for $1.09, while a one-liter bottle is $1.14.

A quick calculator consolation suggests that something fishy is going on here. One liter is more expensive than two But four liters costs less than three. This doesn't agree with what they told us in Ec 10, does it?

Actually, Store 24 doesn't stock two liter bottles of the sodas that they carry in one liter sizes, and vice-versa Therefore, aficionados of ginger ale, which is only available in one-liter containers, must pay a higher price for half as much of their favorite beverage as dedicated Coke drinkers.

But those Coke fans can still get more for less by buying two two-liter bottles instead of one three-liter bottle or three one liter bottles.

Store 24 employee Jessica M. Barry agreed that the prices, were uneven, explaining that two-liter bottles are purchased at a lower rate since they are sold at such a high volume. "We do sell three-liter Cokes," said Bary, "but why people buy them I have no idea."
