Purses, Lockers Targets of Theft

Police Blotter

Burglars made off with more than $1000 in property in two separate incidents during this past week, University Police reported yesterday.

The first robbery occurred at the Kennedy School of Government last Friday, April 19, between noon and 3:30 p.m. when someone stole several wallets and purses from offices in the building. One of the purses was recovered later in a Kennedy School office.

Police said they have one suspect in the case, whom they described as a Black mark 5'10", with a small beard and a small Afro, wearing a brown plain shirt. Their investigation so far has turned up nothing.

Field House Theft

The second incident took place last Saturday at Dillon Field House between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. An unidentified burglar broke into the University of Pennsylvania baseball team's locker room and stole over $750 worth of property. The baseball team was playing Harvard at the time of the crime.

In all, police recorded 11 larcenies from the locker room. During the spree, the burglar took stereo equipment, a watch, clothing, wallets, cash, and personal papers. Police are investigating the incident but have no suspects.

Assistant Director of Athletics Scott H. Anderson said that normal policy is to collect visiting teams' valuables for protection. However, Penn declined, according to Anderson.

"We're pretty careful [about protecting valuables]," Anderson said "We've had maybe two incidents in the last three years." He said that the more teams that use the Field House, the more traffic there is, and it's hard to monitor who is supposed to be there and who isn't.

Anderson said that the Athletic Department is planning to take extra steps for security during the remainder of the year. "This Saturday, we are going to have a policeman on duty," he said.

Among other crimes reported to the Harvard Police during the week ending Thursday, April 25 were the thefts of six bicycles. Police have no suspects in any of the cases.
