Harvard baseball pitcher Mike Presz may undergo arthroscopic surgery to discover the source of a shoulder inflammation that has kept him off the mound since the end of March.
Dr. Arthur L. Boland, head surgeon in the department of athletics, yesterday recommended the exploratory operation, Presz said last night. The surgery, called an arthrogram, would take two to three weeks to heal.
Last year Presz went 7-0, with a 4.89 ERA. He became the third Harvard pitcher since 1927 to compile a perfect won-lost record.
Presz first suffered the inflammation over the summer, when he pitched in the Tri-County League. This year he won Harvard's second game, against U.C. Riverside, and started the team's seventh game, a win over Missouri, before succumbing to the injury.
