The Harvard men's golf team shot its best 18-hole round of the season yesterday, at the Concord Country Club, in coming from behind to retain its Greater Boston Championship.
The Crimson triumphed over local rivals Boston College, Tufts, MIT and Northeastern with a combined score of 782 over the two 18-hole rounds of the tournament. The top five scores for each 18-hole round were counted for each team.
Entering the second and final round. Harvard trailed Boston College by two, 395-397, with MIT pressing the Crimson hard from third place.
The golfers responded with their best round of the season, a 385, to overtake rival B.C. and take the tournament going away--defeating B.C. by 21 points and third-place Tufts by 28.
In successfully defending its title, Harvard crushed Charles River opponent MIT, who had dealt the Crimson a defeat in an individual match just the previous week.
Co-Captain Cher Nastala and Ian Bickley led the way with 75/72 and 75/78 rounds, respectively, on the par-71 course.
"We played well as a team," Nastala said. "Usually we have trouble getting everyone to play well the same day. Today we started to gel. This gets us ready for the Ivies this weekend."
Nastala credited the excellent score of the Harvard squad to the warm, favorable conditions, as opposed to the cold March weather of the team's previous matches.
