The Radcliffe rugby team edged Dartmouth, 10-8, in the final of the first annual Ivy League Championships last weekend in Philadelphia.
Dartmouth was the tournament' top seed, an honor the Big Green earned by knocking off Radcliffe in the fall. But the Black and White entered the event confident that they could avenge that setback.
"I personally expected to win," said Claudia O'Grady, president of the Radcliffe Rugby Football Club. "We were really anxious to play [Dartmouth] and show them that the seeding was wrong," O'Grady added.
The championship game was Radcliffe's only real challenge in the tournament, and things looked grim when Dartmouth jumped on top with an early try. "That really rattled us," O'Grady said.
Down 4-0, Radcliffe rallied for the win on tries by Louy Meacham and Eliza Schwarz and a conversion by Heather Flewelling.
Schwa, a freshman, and forward Lisa. Zuckerman, a sophomore played outstanding games despite their lack of experience.
Yellow Brick Road
Radcliffe had an easy journey to the final. After handily defeating crosstown rival MIT, 12-4, in the quarter final, the ruggers embarrassed second-round opponent Cornell, 26 0.
There are no National Chanpionships for the woman, but Radcliffe has a rematch with Dartmouth to look forward to in just two weeks.
