The Harvard men's swimming team yesterday jumped out to a 46-point lead in the first day of the Eastern Championships at Brown.

The Crimson, winner of the last 50 consecutive tourneys, started off in menacting form, earning second, third, fourth, fifth, ninth and 10th in meet's first scoring event, the meter freestyle.

Freshman David Berkoff won the 200-m individual medley, and Dan Watson continued his domination of Eastern diving, setting Eastern and meet records in the one-meter dive with a score of 576.15.

The Crimson also placed third in the medley relay, its weakest relay event.

Junior Peter Egan finished fourth in the 500 free with a personal-best time.

After the first day, Harvard had totaled 172 points, Princeton 126 and Penn State, 96.
