Rogers Denies Reports
He's Candidate For Lions' Job
PHEONIX--Arizona State's Darryl Rogers angrily denied reports last night that he is in line to become the next head coach of the National Football League's Detroit Lions.
"I am not a candidate," Rogers told an Arizona Republic reporter who met him at Sky Harbor International Airport here after returning from a recruiting trip in San Francisco.
"I have not had any discussions with anybody in Detroit," Rogers added. "I was not in Detroit. I don't think I've been in Detroit since I left Michigan State" in 1980 to come to Arizona State.
"I don't know how all of this got started. I called my secretary and she said all heck was breaking loose."
Asked about the report, Rogers' secretary Joann Demassa replied: "I think there's only one man who knows the answer."
Several published reports in Detroit and Phoenix suggested that Rogers, 49, is in line for the job.
"I thought LaVell Edwards (head coach of nation champion Brigham Young) was going to get the Detroit job," Rogers said. "Back in the Midwest, all the talk was about him and (West Virgina's) Don Nehlen."
However, one source told the Republic that Rogers would sign a five-year contract worth $1.8 million with the Lions this week.
The Republic also said it had learned that Rogers was issued plane tickets for a flight from San Francisco to Detroit early yesterday morning with a return flight from Detroit to Phoenix on Thursday.
But Rogers said he went to San Francisco to help one of his assistant coaches with a recruit and then "I flew to Chicago to talk to another recruit" before returning to Phoenix.
