Baseball Drugs
SAN DIEGO--Commissioner Peter Ueberroth called on baseball Tuesday to "show the way" for society in its battle with drugs, while teams began the slow process of rebuilding for a new season at the sport's annual winter convention.
In the commissioner's traditional "state of the sport" address to the convention, Ueberroth said a successful battle against cocaine in baseball could act as "a domino for society."
While promising a drug-free sport, the commissioner said cocaine had "attacked the underbelly of society.... We have gotten a lot of publicity about it, and we have to solve the problem."
In a wide-ranging address, Ueberroth also said baseball may have turned the corner on its financial problems. He also denied any collusion among owners to retard free-agent salaries.
Ueberroth's remarks preceeded the winter draft of professional players not protected on any team's 40-man roster. Among the selections were veteran major leaguer Clint Hurdle and Ed Williams.
