Rugby
The weather was perfect.
The opponent was perfect.
The play was almost perfect.
The Radcliffe rugby team pranced over Princeton Saturday, 14--4. The Black & White watched their record soar to 4--1, and certainly weren't lacking in confidence.
"I definitely plan on winning the Ivy League Championship this year," freshman Eliza Schwartz said.
Radcliffe totally dominated the play on Saturday, scoring all 14 points in the first half. Schwartz scored two tries, Alisse Balboni scored one try, and Heather Flewelling cashed in on a two point kick conversion.
In addition to scoring, the Black & White's A--side hit hard and played great defense--stifling the Tigers on their few scoring opportunities in the first half. After one half, the score stood 14--0.
The B--side, sparked by the A--side, played the whole second half, hit hard and stayed tough on defense. The Tigers' lone score came towards the end of the second half.
"The team is filled with an extraordinary amount of individual talent," Schwartz said. "One of our problems, however, is coming together and playing as a team."
If the Black & White can prevent the ball from getting stuck in the forward pack--a problem which resulted in its only loss (at the hands of Cornell)--it will be well on the way to solving this problem.
Sailing
The Harvard sailing team captured second place in competition for the Shell Trophy this weekend at MIT. The Crimson competed against 15 other squads from across the nation at the regatta.
For the 12 northeastern teams participating, the weekend served as a qualifier for the Atlantic Coast Championship.
Horses
In only its fourth show ever, Harvard's equestrian club travelled to the University of Lowell over the weekend--and came away with an impressive smattering of prizes.
In the open horsemanship division, Gabey Gosman and Mark Samuel both placed third. Gosman took home more than one honor, finishing first in open horsemanship over fences as well.
Hannah Bouldin (reserve), Sue Rutfield (sixth) and Kim Smith (fourth) all placed in the intermediate horsemanship category--and Smith also finished second in intermediate horsemanship over fences.
Club founder Laura Dadagian nabbed a fourth in novice horsemanship, while Mary Krauss placed third in advanced walk-trot.
Tennis
The Harvard women's tennis team dropped only three individual matches on the way to a weekend sweep of William & Mary and Virginia.
The netwomen downed Virginia Saturday, 8-1, with all six singles players claiming victories.
Only Virginia's 6-2, 6-0 upset of third-doubles team Cindy Buchsbaum and Kristin Bland marred the Crimson slate.
The Tribe, the host for the weekend, gave Harvard a bit of a scare the following day by knocking off Buchsbaum and Kathy Vigna, the Crimson's top two singles players.
However, the netwomen hung on to capture the remaining four singles matches and all three doubles contests--giving the Crimson a decisive 7-2 victory.
