BOSTON--Rich Gedman's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning scored Mike Easler with the tie-breaking run last night as the Boston Red Sox clinched fourth place in the American League East with a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Bob Stanley (9-10) replaced starter Rich Gale with one out in the seventh for the victory. Rookie Nate Snell (1-1) who relieved Oriole starter Bill Swaggerty at the start of the seventh, was the loser.
Tony Armas' three-run homer, his major league-leading 43rd, gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Armas took the major league in RBI with 123, one more than teammate Jim Rice.
Baltimore's Cal Ripken set an American League record for shortstop with five assists for a total of 575, breaking Roy Smalley's record of 572 with Minnesota in 1979.
Montreal 7, New York 0
MONTREAL--Rookie left-hander Joe Hesketh pitched a four-hitter and Dan Driessen drove in three runs with a homer and a single to lead the Montreal Expos to a 7-0 shutout of the New York Mets last night.
Hesketh (2-2) hurled the first complete game of his major league career, striking out seven while walking one.
Driessen gave the Expos the lead with his 15th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the second off Mets starter Calvin Schiraldi (0-2).
The Expos added four runs in the fourth. A leadoff single by Gary Carter and successive walks to Driessen and Tim Wallach loaded the bases.
In the fifth, Driessen singled home Carter, who had doubled, for the Expos' seventh run.
