Guessing

BOSTON--Manager Ralph Houk of the Boston Red Sox kept everyone guessing yesterday on whether he will retire or return to the American League club in 1985.

"I'll make a decision tomorrow." Houk said last night, just moments before the Red Sox met the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of their final 1984 homestand.

Houk, who turned 65 last month, had said he would not make a decision until he met with Haywood Sullivan, co-owner and chief operating officer of the Red Sox.

Neither Houk nor Sullivan would say that they met privately Monday. However, they laughed and joked while chatting with visitors in Houk's office.

"Yes, I have been asked to return, but I won't make a decision until I sit down with Sully." Houk said before Sullivan visited the clubhouse shortly before 4 p.m. "I'll definitely make a decision before the end of the season next Sunday."

Later, Houk said he would have something definite to report "sometime Tuesday."

Houk is completing his fourth season as manager of the Red Sox and his 20th in the American League.
