Radcliffe Crew to Nationals
Taking advantage of what senior Captain Rosemary Pugh calls "a good opportunity to get some more rowing in," the Radcliffe varsity heavyweight eight will set sail for Seattle. Wash, and national competition next Tuesday.
The Black and White heavyweight crew that placed third in the East at last week's Sprints will be looking to take first on the National's 1000-meter course--the Eastern Sprints are 1500--and setting a score with Wisconsin and Dartmouth, the only squads to defeat the oars women this season.
The other forces to reckon with will be defending national champion Washington and Princeton. The Tigers snagged fourth at the Sprints, three seconds back from Radcliffe.
Victory in a June 2 preliminary heat will ensure the winner of a place in the championship round, as would a triumph in the consolation heat.
But the oarswomen hope not to have to row in a consolation round. A cautiously optimistic Pugh says. "We have a good shot at winning."
The Radcliffe varsity lightweight crew qualified for the national, with its victory is the Eastern Sprints. The lights will also send a second boat of four to the nationals.
