Just four years after she picked up a lacrosse stick for the first time. Harvard women's lacrosse star Maggie Hart has been named an All-American.
The announcement of the All-American team, selected annually by the nation's Division I women's lacrosse coaches, came during the weekend's Final Four festivities of the 1984 NCAA women's lacrosse tournament.
Hart's selection to the 1984 All-America squad capped a brilliant career that saw the Albuquerque. N.M. native learn the game her freshman year and master is by this, her senior year.
The captain of this year's Harvard squad, Hart led the laxwomen to a 12-2 record that included a fourth straight Ivy League championship, a 12-game winning streak, a number-four national ranking and a berth in the quarterfinal of the 1984 NCAA women's lacrosse tournament.
The University of Massachusetts ended Hart's collegiate career, however, with a 5-4 victory in the quarterfinal game last weekend.
Hart finished the year as Harvard's top scorer, and the attacker's pick to the All-America team marked the second straight year that a Harvard player has made the prestigious squad. Maureen Finn and Francesca DenHartog were named All-Americans last year.
The selection to the 16 member team--to which only three New England players were named--came just one day after Hart and four other Crimson laxwomen were named to the All-New England team.
The only member of the Harvard offense to garner a place on the All-New England squad, she was joined on the team by four Harvard defense players.
Junior defenders Ellen O'Neil, Andy Mainelli and Trina Krickett Johnson all earned the New England recognition.
Meanwhile yesterday, the nation second-ranked Temple squad upset top-seeded Maryland, 6-4, in the NCAA championship game at Boston University's Nickerson Field. Delaware defeated the UMass squad that knocked Harvard out of the tourney in the consolation game that determined third place.
