MINNEAPOLIS--The Edmonton Oilers, behind Grant Fuhr's stingy goaltending, rode into their second straight Stanley Cup final with a 3-1, series-sweeping victory over the Minnesota North Stars last night.

The Oilers will play the winner of the Montreal-New York Islanders semifinal series, which is tied 2-2, since the four game sweep of Minnesota gave Edmonton the Campbell Conference crown.

Edmonton lost in the finals of last year's Stanley Cup in four consecutive games to the Islanders.

Fuhr, who missed the end of Game 2 and all of Game 3 with a bruised elbow, stopped 23 Minnesota shots.

He specifically sparkled in the second period, robbing Minnesota's Neal Broten from point-blank range and snuffing Keith Acton from just outside the crease.

Neither team scored for the first 25 minutes of bruising hockey, a marked difference from the 8-5 shootout in the third game.

But five minutes into the second period, Edmonton defenseman Don Jackson wheeled down the right sideboards, curled in toward the goal while fending off Minnesota's Brad Maxwell, and flicked in the first goal of the game and his first score in 14 playoff games.

UNIONDALE, N.Y.--Mike Bossy's second-period goal 97 seconds after goaltender Billy Smith stopped a penalty shot lifted the New York Islanders to a 3-1 victory last night over Montreal and a 2-2 deadlock in the National Hockey League semifinal playoff series with the Canadiens.

Game 5 of the best-of-seven Prince of Wales final will be played tomorrow night in Montreal, where the Canadiens won the first two games of the series against the four-time Stanley Cup champions.

Smith used his left leg pad to block Mats Nashund's backhander on the penalty shot at 15:03 of the second period, with the score tied 1-1. It was the first penalty shot in post season play faced by Smith, who extended his record of playoff victories to 82 in his 116th Stanley Cup appearance, another NHL mark for a goalie.

The big save by Smith ignited the Islanders and Bossy, their most potent weapon, collected the decisive goal at 16:40. Defenseman Ken Morrow penetrated deep into the Canadiens' zone and, as he was knocked to the ice, backhanded a feed in front of the net to Bossy.

The Islanders sharpshooter put a wrist shot past the stick of goalies Steve Penney for his 16th game-winning goal in Stanley Cup competition. Bossy stands second only to Maurice Richard, who had 18.
