Capitals Edge Bruins, 3-2
BOSTON--Alan Haworth scored midway through the second period, and Washington's National Hockey League-leading defense, sparked by goalie Pat Riggin, took over from there as the Capitals edged the Boston Bruins 2-1 last night.
The victory was the sixth in a row for the Capitals, who remained two points behind the New York Islanders, leaders of the Patrick Division.
Boston, in second place in the Adams Division, started the night two points behind Buffalo.
Haworth got the game-winning goal at 12-08 of the second period when Boston's Tom Fergus inadvertently gave him the puck. Haworth then connected for his 22nd gold of the season on a 50-foot slapshot over the glove of goalie Pete Peeters.
