The Harvard women's tennis team shocked nationally ranked Clemson University, 6-3, yesterday, in first-day action at the Washington National Collegiate Tennis Classic being held at Northwestern University.
The Crimson used wins in singles from Kathy Vigna, Erika Smith, and Debbie Kaufman and then a sweep of all three doubles matches to post one of its biggest wins in history over the 13th-ranked Tigers.
Harvard's Elizabeth Evans and Robin Ross took the number-one doubles match, Vigna and Roberta Hing squeaked out a three-set win in number-two doubles and Smith and Kaufman held on for a straight set at the number three position.
The net women will face highly touted North western in second-round action today.
