Flutie Honored
MEDFORD, Mass. -- Quarterback Doug Flutie, Boston College's Heisman Trophy winner, received another honor at last night's annual New England Football Writers' awards dinner.
Flutie, who set a national intercollegiate passing record in his four-year career at BC, received the Harry Agganis Memorial Award as New England's outstanding senior football player.
BC Coach Jack Bicknell, who will lead the 9-2 BC Eagles against Houston in the Cotton Bowl Jan. 1, was voted the New England Coach of the Year Award.
The George Carens Memorial Award for contribution to football over the years went to Harry Jacunski, a member of Fordham's famed "Seven Blocks of Granite." Jacunski coached the Yale freshman team for 33 years.
Kerry Lyne of Bowdoin received the Jerry Nason Award for senior achievement, persevering against odds to succeed in football.
The Coca-Cola Gold Helmet Awards went to Flutie as the Division I player of the year and to Gary-Errico of Lowell as the Division II player of the year
Icemen Number One
Harvard, the only undefeated team in major college hockey, leads the ECAC this week, while Providence, playing impressive hockey at both ends of the ice, holds a slim lead in Hockey East.
With strong forechecking and solid goaltending. Providence beat New Hampshire 3-2 to move to 8-5-1 in the league (8-5-1 overall) for a one-point lead over Boston College.
"We got a guy on the puck right away and we got the trailing player on the boards waiting for the puck to come up," said captain Tim Army.
After Providence went ahead 2-1, UNH had to take more chances to try to scramble back, "and they couldn't play as good defensively when they opened up," Army said.
"Almost every time we had at least one guy (forward) back, and that's been our secret," said Coach Steve Stirling "We played well in all three zones"
Close behind the Friars are the BC Eagles, who beat Michigan Tech 4-2 and 6-2 to stand at 8-5-1
