In a rollercoaster thriller, the Harvard men's hockey team upset Canada's defending national champion University of Toronto squad, 5-4. last night at Toronto squad, 5-4, last night at Toronto Ont.
The win keeps the icemen's record perfect through five games. Harvard plays at the University of Western Ontario tonight.
Scoring leader Scott Fusco knocked in two power play goals, both in the second period, as the Crimson built up a 3-0 lead. Rob Ohno chipped in a shorthanded goal for the other Harvard score.
After the second intermission, the host Varsity Blues quickly retaliated. They broke onto the scoreboard 2:50 into the final period, then narrowed the gap again just 29 seconds later Midway through the period, Toronto made it 3-3.
But just 24 seconds after Doug Caines knotted the score, junior Jim Smith knocked home the goal that put Harvard up for good. After a melee in front of the Toronto net, the puck slid out to Smith. While kneeling seven feet from the crease, Smith controlled the puck and directed it into the net.
Two minutes later, junior Peter Follows (an Ontario native) added the Crimson's fifth and final tally on a wrist shot from about 25 feet out Toronto again closed to within one with just over three minutes remaining, but Harvard stood firm.
The Crimson victory came despite a stellar performance by Varsity Blue goalie Kevin Hamlin, who fended off 43 of Harvard's 48 shots on goal Harvard goalie Grant Blair, from Ancaster, Ont, made 29 saves.
