The Harvard wrestling team opened its season yesterday with an impressive 41-3 victory over Plymouth State at the Indoor Athletic Building.
The matmen downed the Panthers in nine of 10 matches, including pins by freshman Jeff Clark and sophomore John Zilcosky. The squad also met Boston University last night and triumphed, 29-11.
The victory over Plymouth State marked the beginning of what Coach John Lee predicts will be a very successful season.
Clark is just one member of what the coach considers the best freshman group he has fielded in his 15 years at the helm of the Crimson--and the Yardlings join 11 returning lettermen from fast year's 11-8 (3-3 Ivy) squad.
The Vorheesville, N.Y. native was a three-time New York State champion at 114 lbs., and he earned a spot as an alternate on the Olympic team last summer.
Clark wrestled at 126 lbs. yesterday, but will likely move up to 134 soon. Freshman Scott Beck, who did not make weight for yesterday's match, will move from the 118-lb. class to 126.
In his match against Plymouth State's John Hayes, Clark wasted no time in grabbing the victory, pinning the Panther at 1:52 of the first round.
Zilcosky, wrestling at 177 lbs., sweated through two rounds against Tom Gibbons before he was able to force the pin with only 20 seconds remaining in the match.
The grapplers' only loss in the Plymouth match came when Todd Grace survived a 6-5 decision over Crimson freshman Mike Hanrahan.
The matmen travel to the Coast Guard Invitational Tournament this weekend.
