Women's Swimming

From the way they were swimming, nobody would have guessed it was so early in the season.

The Harvard women's swimming team yesterday swept to a 76-38 victory over Villanova in only its second meet of the year, boosting its record to 1-1.

"We killed them, overpowered them by a longshot," said Co-Captain Cary Mazzone.

Even more encouraging than the lopsided score was the fact that several team members met time standards that would qualify them for the Eastern Women's Swimming League championships at the end of the season.

The Crimson dominated the meet, winning all but two events. Leading the way were three freshmen standouts, Karen Dehmel, Diana Watts and Lisa Schauwecker, each nabbing a pair of firsts.

Dehmel won the 1000-yd. freestyle (10:30.02) and 200-yd. individual medley (2:12.00), Schauwecker the 200-yd. freestyle and 200-yd. breaststroke, and Watts the 50 and 100-yd. freestyle.

"We started off great by winning the 200-yd. medley relay," said Marie Ciepiela. "Overall, we just had a lot of enthusiasm."

The enthusiasm carried over to the diving events as well, where senior Jennifer Goldberg captured first in both the one-and three-meter events. "The divers were exceptional, as usual," said an appreciative Mazzone.

"The whole team swam so well," said Dehmel. "I just hope that we can carry it through the entire season."

The aquawomen host a tri-meet with Maine and Boston College this Saturday, and then travel to Brown next Wednesday.
