A limited meal plan, offering lunch and continental breakfast, will be available to Harvard students for the first time this spring recess.
For $16.25, students will be able to get lunch at the Lehman Hall dining room from March 26 to 30. A continental breakfast will also be served to the plan's subscribers on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Frank J. Weissbecker, director of Food Services, yesterday estimated that 30 percent of undergraduates will stay in Cambridge over the spring break. He added that the program is an experimental one designed to "fill a student need."
Contracts for the special plan may be purchased at the Food Services accounting office on 399 Harvard Street between 9 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m. from February 13 to March 9. Students can charge the cost to their term bill.
Council Plan
In an unrelated venture, the Undergraduate Council may also offer meals over the break if enough students indicate interest. Sign-up sheets are currently posted in several of the Houses, and Duncan J. Griffin '84, a member of the council's residential committee, said that at least 400 students will have to sign up to make the plan feasible.
Under the council's proposal, students can choose one of three plans: breakfast and lunch, lunch only, or lunch and dinner. Meals would probably be served in the Union, and Griffin said that the cost for the two meals per day would be between $50 and $70.
John G. Hornblower '84, a member of the heavyweight crew team, which traditionally remains close to the Charles during spring break, said yesterday that the absence of a meal plan has been "a real hassle."
Hornblower added that if he stays in Cambridge this spring, he will probably enroll in a meal plan because of convenience.
Lauren M. Crocker '85, a member of the women's crew team, said yesterday that in past years team members were given $20 for vacation-time meals. "It was kind of a drag."
Crocker was enthusiastic about the new plans: "After all, they feed the football team every year before school begins."
