Ivy League Wins Just One of Eight Games On First Weekend of Intersectional Play

The first week of intersectional play became a nightmare for the Ivy League, as the green-walled institutions endured a miserable 1-7 Saturday.

Princeton 46, Bucknell 28

The sole Ivy victory looked like a certain loss when the visiting Pennsylvanians took a 28-0 first-half advantage at Princeton, N.J. But Tiger sophomore quarterback Doug Butler made the most of his first varsity start, throwing for 411 yards and a school-record five touchdowns to down Bucknell, 46-28, and even Princeton's record at 1-1.

UConn 38, Yale 12

Junior safety Matt Latham returned two punts for touchdowns and set up a third score with an interception to lead Connecticut to a 38-12 thrashing of Yale at the Yale Bowl.

URI 30, Brown 16

Quarterback Dave Wienke completed 16 of 34 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown to lead Rhode Island past intrastate rival Brown, 30-16, ht Providence, R.I.

A 64-yard Wienke touchdown pass to Damcon Reilly midway through the third quarter clinched the Rams' first Governor's Cup in five years. Brown's record is now 1-1; URI is 3-0.

Lafayette 34, Columbia 29

Craig Williams three yard plunge with 71 seconds remaining lifted Lafayette to a 34-29 victory over Columbia at Easton, Pa. Leopard quarterback Frank Novak fired four touchdown passes and completed 23 of 34 for 306 yards.

Columbia came back from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 29-28 lead with six minutes to go in the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Witkowski to tight end Dan Upperco. Witkowski connected with Don Lewis for the two point conversion.

The setback dropped Columbia's record to 0-2; Lafayette is 3-0.
