Radcliffe College was founded as an independent institution in 1879, and for many years it provided an education to young women by paying Harvard lecturers to repeat afternoons what they told young men to the mornings. The stringencies of World War II brought that arrangement to a close, and several subsequent agreements between the schools have resulted in a Harvard that is coeducational.
Radcliffe, on the other hand, no longer has any day-to-day responsibility for the education or residential life of undergraduate women Yet, it boasts its own student government, a befty endowment, some valuable land, several respected research centers, and a president. Many around here think Radcliffe should give it up Stay tuned for further details.
