Batmen Take Four, Sweep Into League Lead

Doyle Huris One-Hitter at Cornell

WEST POINT, N.Y.--For three years the seniors on the Harvard baseball team have waited for the week.

After winning an Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) title their freshman year, the batmen have finished well out of the running twice. Now, with the help of two doubleheader sweeps this weekend at Cornell Friday (scores of 9-3 and 3-0) and Army Saturday (7-4 and 5-3), the Crimson enters the final week of EIBL action stop the standings.

With 11-4-1 Navy and 8-4 Dartmouth close on its tail, Harvard--now 12-3-1 in league play--is anything but locked into the number one spot. The Crimson must sweep its final doubleheader Saturday at Dartmouth to stay ahead of Navy, which will make up its rained-out twinbill with Cornell this Sunday at a neutral site.

Good pitching is essential down the stretch--and in the playoffs--and that's how the usually heavy-hitting batmen moved into the league lead. Senior Bill Doyle came through with the best performance, a one-hitter in the second game at Ithaca. No Cornell runner made it to second base, and the first Big Red hit didn't come until Doyle was one out away from the first Harvard no-hitter in two years. The lone single was one of just three Big Red balls that made it into the outfield, as Doyle put on a display of control pitching that left Cornell batters gaping at knee-high strikes.

Doyle's effort was definitely needed, as the Crimson amassed just three runs. Similarly, in Saturday's second game at Army, Harvard bats supported Charlie Marchese with only five runs. Like Doyle, Marchese kept things under control, fanning six while allowing just one Cadel a free pass.

But despite the cool Crimson bats in those two games, it was the opener with Army that gave Harvard its biggest scare, as the game entered the sixth inning with the score dead-locked at one.

Harvard regained the advantage, as Ed Farrell led things off. Farrell doubled an 0-2 pitch, then watched as Vinnie Martelli stroked another 0-2 pitch over the left field fence and beyond. One out later, Jay McNamara doubled, then scored under Big Red catcher Dave Menapace's tag when Tony DiCesare lined one to left. When Scott Vierra and Bruce Weller nabbed back-to-back singles, Harvard led 5 1 and Cornell starter Steve Huber left in favor of Larry Brown.

Brown escaped the inning but made one crucial mistake, he left Farrell in the on-deck circle. In the seventh, Farrell led off for the third time and for the third time Harvard tallied runs. By the time Vierra smashed a 400ft. gopher ball to left center. Harvard had nabbed eight runs in two innings and a lock on the opener.

Crimson bats went snoozing again in the nightcap, but Weller and Elliott Rivera got consecutive singles in the third, and Brad Bauer grounded Weller home to give Harvard the lead. Two innings later, the Crimson got security when Weller and Bauer scored on a Farrell double and a Martelli single. The three runs were enough for Doyle.

Harvard wasted no time getting a jump on Army Saturday. Three Cadet passed balls and four Cadet errors helped Harvard to the 7-4 victory.

In the second game, the Crimson took an early led with two runs in the first and one in both the second and the third. But things stopped there, and Army made it close with three runs in the sixth. Then came the dispute.

With two down in the top of the seventh and Vierra and Bauer at the corners, Bauer sped towards second base. Unprepared for the move, Cadet catcher Terry Douglas threw down to second base. While Bauer got himself involved in a rundown. Rivera brought the insurance run home from third Base umpire Tony Bartolino ruled Bauer out of the basepath, and the Cadets protested that the third out had come before Rivera crossed the plate. Three minutes after the end of the inning, the umpires ruled that the run hadn't scored after all. But Crimson Cadet Alex Nahigian protested the protest, and two minutes later home plate umpire Jack Schrumpf announced that the run had scored.
