Dave Stapleton capped a five-run first inning with a three-run homer and Dwight Evans added a two-run shot in the fourth yesterday to power the Boston Red Sox to a 7-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Carl Yastzremski drove in Boston's first two runs with a bases-loaded single and Wade Boggs contributed two singles and a double as the Red Sox avenged a 7-1 loss to Toronto in their American League season opener on Tuesday.
Reliever Bob Stanley earned the victory by checking the Blue Jays on one run over the final five innings after Toronto tagged starter John Tudor for seven hits in the first three innings, including a two-run homer by Cliff Johnson and a solo shot by Jesse Barfield.
Luis Leal, who had a 3-0 record in Boston entering the game, was the loser.
Wade Trophy
Long Beach State University senior LaTaunya Pollard was named winner of the sixth Wade Trophy, awarded to the outstanding woman college basketball player in the nation.
1984 Summer Olympics
ABC-TV announced that its soap opera programming will be shortened, but not eliminated as was originally planned, to allow for coverage of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
