NCAA Challenged

A Weekly Survey of News from Other Campus

In a case that could affect thousands of students nationwide, a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania has brought suit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC), challenging their policy of barring transfer students from participating in sports for one year.

The law suit was filed in U.S. District Court two weeks ago by Farley Weiss, who transferred to the University from Arizona State University last semester, and is seeking to join the varsity tennis team without sitting out for the required year.

Weiss is claiming that the so-called "red-shirt" policy endorsed by both the NCAA and ECAC unfairly prevents him from playing on the team, and he is seeking to have the rule overturned.

But ECAC Associate Commissioner Clayton Chapmun said the conference will stand by its rule. The Daily Peroisylymian
