The Harvard men's hockey team's Fusco brothers, senior defenseman Mark and sophomore center Scott were named to the All-ECAC first team, it was announced yesterday at a press conference at the Boston Garden.
Mark nabbed All-East honors for the fourth straight year, boosting his chances of becoming Harvard's first three time. All-American since Joe Cavanagh '71. Scott made the All-East team for the first time.
Providence defenseman Randy Velishek nosed out teammate Kurt Kleinendorst and the elder Fusco in the coaches voting for ECAC Player of the Year Both Fusco and Kleinendorst had more impressive scoring statistics, but the Friars' senior co-captain has a reputation as an expert defensive-minded blueliner.
RPI's George Servinis, the East's top scorer by a wide margin this season, was named ECAC Rookie of the Year, our polling Harvard goalie Grant Blair, who posted the league's lowest goals-against average. The voting for the award (and for the other honors) took place around the third week of February, which may have hurt Blair. Many coaches may have mailed in their ballots before the yearling posted late season shutouts versus Yale and Brown.
