Tribe Testifies

Short Takes

Laurence H. Tribe '62, professor of Law, yesterday testified on Capitol Hill against a constitutional amendment prohibiting abortion.

Tribe argued against the Human Life Federalism Amendment, which would allow individual states to prohibit abortion before the Senate Judiciary Sub-Committee on the Constitution. Sen. Orrin Hatch (D-Utah), who sponsored the legislation, chairs that sub-committee.

The sub-committee requested that Tribe and Lynn Wartel, professor of Law at Brigham Young University, testify about the legality of the abortion amendment, according to a staffer. Wartel argued in factor of the Hatch proposal.

Tribe called the proposed constitutional amendment "garbage" earlier this week, saying that he was persuaded to testify to rebut arguments for what he called a "states-rights" amendment.
